TULSA – U.S. Soccer’s most prestigious tournament will return in 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. FC Tulsa will participate in next year’s U.S. Open Cup, a national tournament that involves independent teams from all divisions of U.S. Soccer, including Major League Soccer, the USL Championship, USL League One, and several fourth division leagues.
The U.S. Open Cup will kick off with the First Round on March 22-23, the earliest start in the tournament’s modern era. Like in past years, FC Tulsa will enter the tournament alongside the other independent USL Championship teams in the Second Round, slated to be played April 5-7.
A new element to the 2022 tournament will be the earlier inclusion of MLS teams into the tournament. For this tournament, 17 MLS teams will enter in the Third Round, one round earlier than in past seasons, increasing the likelihood that FC Tulsa will face off against an MLS team should it win its Second Round match. FC Tulsa has played only one MLS team in a competitive match, a 2-1 loss to FC Dallas in the Fourth Round of the 2017 U.S. Open Cup.
FC Tulsa will find out its potential opponents for its Second Round matchup on January 26 when possible pairings are announced. Prior to the cancellation of the U.S. Open Cup in 2020, FC Tulsa was scheduled to play the winner of NPSL teams Tulsa Athletic and Fort Worth Vaqueros in the Second Round.
All matches in the 2022 Open Cup will be broadcast on ESPN+.
