Day 1 in the Books for FC Tulsa Preseason Camp

TULSA – FC Tulsa’s preseason is officially underway. The 2021 roster reported for preseason camp this morning at Titan Sports Complex to go through initial team meetings, a tour of the facility and testing. It was the first chance for the new players to meet coaches and staff in person and the returners to catch up.

Club president James Cannon kicked off the day with opening remarks and players received a social media refresher from FC Tulsa’s content team.

“It was a productive first day to see many of the faces around the club, especially the ones that are behind the scenes doing the day-to-day work we don't see often,” said defender Leo Folla. “Meeting the guys and coaching staff and getting a feel for the environment definitely set the tone for what to expect in 202,1 and I'm excited.”

The team will spend the first week of preseason camp undergoing COVID-19 testing and tomorrow will start individual training to build up physical fitness after a long offseason. Next Tuesday, the players will hold their first official team training session and will begin gearing up for preseason matches.

FC Tulsa will kick off its 2021 home schedule with a prime preseason matchup against Austin Bold FC on April 17 at ONEOK Field. Tickets to the match are included in 2021 Season Ticket Memberships.

FC Tulsa To Play Houston Dynamo FC to Open 2021 Preseason

TULSA – As the club looks to build on an impressive 2020 campaign, FC Tulsa will begin its 2021 preseason schedule by playing against the highest competition level in the U.S. FC Tulsa will travel to take on Houston Dynamo FC at Ellis Field at Texas A&M on Wednesday, March 24 at 4 p.m.

“This is just another step in the growth of our club,” said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. “When MLS teams see the progress we have made both on and off the field and reach out wanting to get us on their schedule, it speaks volumes to the work we have put in over the last 18 months. This will be a great opportunity to evaluate the players against good competition early in our preseason.”

This will be the first time since the 2018 preseason that FC Tulsa will square off against an MLS foe. In March of that year, Tulsa led for nearly 50 minutes but lost 2-1 to Chicago Fire FC in Chicago. Tulsa has also battled with MLS side FC Dallas in the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, falling 2-1 on a last-minute goal.

The friendly against Houston Dynamo FC is the second match announced so far for FC Tulsa’s 2021 preseason schedule. FC Tulsa announced last week that it would be hosting Austin Bold FC at ONEOK Field on April 17, a match that is included in all 2021 Season Ticket packages, which are now on sale.

FC Tulsa’s players reported to preseason camp in Tulsa today and will begin individual training tomorrow. Full team training is set to begin on Tuesday, March 9.

More preseason match announcements regarding both home and road friendlies as well as a full regular season schedule will be made in the coming weeks as the club prepares for the upcoming 2021 USL Championship season.

FC Tulsa Makes $25,000 Donation to Greenwood Rising to Promote Education Surrounding 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre

TULSA – To help educate itself about Black Wall Street and the events surrounding the Tulsa Race Massacre, FC Tulsa front office staff spent Thursday afternoon on a tour through the Greenwood District of north Tulsa, led by Chief Egunwale Amusan, the president of the African Ancestral Society. Wanting to help enlighten others in Tulsa and visitors from around the country, FC Tulsa has made a $25,000 donation to the Greenwood Rising capital project, a state-of-the-art history center being built at the southeast corner of Greenwood and Archer in downtown Tulsa, which will be completed this Spring.

“We recognize there has not been nearly enough taught in our society about the Tulsa Race Massacre,” said FC Tulsa president James Cannon. “So, our first goal was to make sure our staff was truly educated about the horrific events surrounding the burning of Black Wall Street a century ago. Now, we want to do our part as a pillar of the Tulsa community to make sure we close that education gap in others with our donation. Once our players report, we will have them go on the tour as well, and we hope to make it an annual tour for every FC Tulsa player.”

FC Tulsa joins the Oklahoma City Thunder, Quiktrip, AEP/PSO, Bank of America, Circle Cinema and many more Oklahoma organizations donating to Greenwood Rising.

The club will continue to work closely with Armstrong and the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre Centennial Commission to find ways to incorporate the Centennial into its 2021 USL Championship season.

FC Tulsa's Michael Nsien, Nemanja Vukovic Earn Upgraded Coaching Licenses

TULSA – Following his completion of a year-long United States Soccer Federation coaching course, FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien was one of the coaches in the Class of 2020 to graduate with his USSF “Pro” License. In addition to Nsien earning the top coaching license in the U.S., FC Tulsa assistant coach Nemanja Vukovic obtained his UEFA “B” license this offseason.

The USSF Pro License is the highest level of professional coaching license that one can achieve in US Soccer. To qualify to take the course, a coach must be actively coaching in MLS, the NWSL, the USL or a member of the U.S. National Team staff. Only around 75 coaches have acquired the license since its introduction, and Nsien is the first African American coach to earn the degree.

“It was a personal challenge,” said Nsien. “The game of soccer is always developing, always changing. I just have one of those curiosities where I want to know what I am not aware of, whether it’s tactically or psychology or even with the leadership part of the game. I tried to use this opportunity to gain as much knowledge as possible, learn from my peers and my mentors in the course.”

Nsien is coming off a career-best season at the helm of FC Tulsa that included his first trip the USL Championship Playoffs on the touchline. He led his hometown club to its first postseason berth since 2017 and set the franchise’s record-long unbeaten streak at seven matches. He was rewarded for his work in 2020 with a multiyear contract extension to continue building FC Tulsa.

Vukovic, born in Titograd, Yugoslavia (now Podgorica, Montenegro), was eligible to achieve his UEFA "B" License following his lengthy playing career in Europe, MLS, NASL and the USL Championship. The license will now allow Vukovic to be internationally recognized as having the ability to be a professional assistant coach, a head coach of an amateur club and youth players up to 16 years old.

“After spending two years in my role of assistant at FC Tulsa, this license is the product of a lot of hard work and education,” said Vukovic. “A phenomenal experience, I've learned a lot over the past year at every seminar I’ve been and by getting this license my appetites just grow. This is just the beginning of my coaching education and the ultimate goal is the UEFA 'Pro' License."

Both Nsien and Vukovic will be joined on the FC Tulsa coaching staff for the third consecutive season with returning top assistant and goalkeepers coach Donovan Ricketts. Ricketts, a legendary CONCACAF and MLS keeper in his own right, coached FC Tulsa keeper Sean Lewis to a career season in 2020 as Lewis earned the club’s MVP award following the standout campaign.

FC Tulsa is preparing for the 2021 USL Championship season with players reporting to preseason camp on March 1 and training beginning next week. More details on FC Tulsa’s 2021 schedule will be announced in the days to come.

83 United leading the charge for Tulsa's Polar Plunge

DONATE TO 83 UNITED'S POLAR PLUNGE FUND

TULSA – 83 United continues to stake its claim for the best fans around. While we already knew this, the FC Tulsa supporters’ group are continuing to support the community off the pitch just like it supports the club on the pitch.

With less than a week to go before the 2021 Polar Plunge, 83 United have enlisted the help of a passionate soccer fanbase across the United States. Through their social media initiatives, the FC Tulsa supporters’ group has been filling in a map of the United States and asking other supporters groups around the country to help the cause. 83 United as a result has raised nearly $10,000, almost a third of the money raised for the Polar Plunge overall. More than 30 supporters groups from 27 states and Scotland have donated to the cause so far, and the push continues with just a few days left to round it off.

“Going into our 3rd year of doing the plunge our goal was not only to raise more money than last year but also to get more participation,” said Denis Lane, president of the supporters’ group. “Having different members from the sports community has been huge, and it really shows how Tulsan’s can pull together for a good cause.  We also have been excited about the support from the soccer community outside of Tulsa, with four other supporters’ groups helping us spread the word.”

For the third year, 83 United is one of 18 Oklahoma area organizations raising money for the Polar Plunge, and event put on by the Special Olympics of Oklahoma. 83 United has raised the second-most money for this year’s polar plunge out of all organizations in Oklahoma, leading the charge for the Oklahoma Special Olympics’ goal of $50,000 raised for this year’s event.

“This cause is special to me because I have seen first-hand what special Olympics can do,” Lane said. “Not only to let people with all abilities to be able to compete and participate but make friends as well.  My son who has Down Syndrome has competed over the years in soccer, bowling, bocce and track.  Getting to hang with friends and mentors was one of the greatest bonuses that the Special Olympics provided that he may not have experienced without it.”

TULSA – FC Tulsa matchdays are returning in front of the fans at ONEOK Field on Saturday, April 17. On Friday morning, the club announced an official preseason match against USL Championship foe Austin Bold FC. Kickoff on April 17 will mark the first outdoor pro sports event in Tulsa during the 2021 calendar year.

“We couldn’t be more excited to re-introduce pro sports at ONEOK Field to Tulsa in 2021,” said FC Tulsa president James Cannon. “Anyone that has followed our offseason signing announcements knows that our 2021 roster is the most talented this franchise has ever built. Our fans will be in for a show each time we take the pitch, starting on April 17.”

Austin Bold FC will be a familiar opponent to FC Tulsa fans after the clubs met three times during the 2020 season and fought for the final Western Conference Group D playoff spot leading into the final week of the regular season. While the three matches between the teams ended in draws, FC Tulsa got the better of Bold FC in the standings with a season-ending 3-match winning streak and clinching a 2020 USL Championship playoff berth.

"It's very important to find quality opponents before the season starts," said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. "We need to be constantly challenging ourselves to see areas of improvement and finalize starters. Austin is a great opponent to measure ourselves as to where we are on April 17th. They have been competitive in their first few years in the league, and last year we saw 3 draws and a playoff race all the way down to the wire. I look forward to that match as I enjoy competing with the coaching staff they have there in Austin, and I have a lot of respect for what they have done."

The match will be included in all 2021 Season Ticket Memberships. Tickets will appear in current Season Ticket Member accounts in the weeks leading up to the match. Single match tickets will be put on sale at a later date. FC Tulsa Teams Up with Tulsa Police Dept. to Launch Project eNGAGE

TULSA – FC Tulsa is teaming up with the Tulsa Police Department to help connect Tulsa law enforcement and under-resourced youth around the city. Dubbed “Project eNGAGE,” TPD officers from the Community Engagement Unit will host monthly gatherings at local community centers where youth from around the area can play Esports, FIFA and Rocket League, listen to guest speakers and enjoy a meal with the officers. The club will provide support for Project eNGAGE including managing the events and coordinating the guest speakers.

“The Tulsa Police Department is proud to join forces with FC Tulsa for Project eNGAGE,” said Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin. “The TPD Community Engagement Unit is always looking for ways to foster positive interactions between officers and the youth of Tulsa, and this new program will help provide a fun and safe environment to help build those relationships.”

Numerous donations and funding from the Tulsa community have allowed the project to become a reality. Local Walmarts have donated 10 TVs for use, while the Tulsa Hills GameStop donated 10 PS4s. FC Tulsa’s Official Supporters Group, 83 United, purchased copies of FIFA, Rocket League and Madden, and a local Target and a local printer, TPSi, also each donated $500 to go towards the initiative.

“It has been so heartwarming to see all corners of our city stepping up to help us get Project eNGAGE off the ground,” said FC Tulsa president James Cannon. “We pride ourselves on being more than just a sports team, but instead an organization that builds a better Tulsa community every day. This opportunity to help bridge the divide between our local police force and the under-resourced youth in our city is another chance for FC Tulsa to live up to that calling.”

Project eNGAGE will kick off on March 25 from 3:30-5 p.m. at the Tulsa Dream Center in north Tulsa, featuring Oklahoma Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell as the guest speaker. Pinnell, a noted FC Tulsa super-fan, will be joined by TPD Chief Wendell Franklin. 

The second Project eNGAGE event will follow on March 31 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Tulsa Hope Academy and will feature Franklin himself as the guest speaker, while 36 Degrees North CEO Devon Laney will be the guest speaker on April 6 from 3-5 p.m. at The Common Good’s Northwest Tulsa Hub. TULSA – FC Tulsa is teaming up with the Tulsa Police Department to help connect Tulsa law enforcement and under-resourced youth around the city. Dubbed “Project eNGAGE,” TPD officers from the Community Engagement Unit will host monthly gatherings at local community centers where youth from around the area can play Esports, FIFA and Rocket League, listen to guest speakers and enjoy a meal with the officers. The club will provide support for Project eNGAGE including managing the events and coordinating the guest speakers.

“The Tulsa Police Department is proud to join forces with FC Tulsa for Project eNGAGE,” said Tulsa Police Chief Wendell Franklin. “The TPD Community Engagement Unit is always looking for ways to foster positive interactions between officers and the youth of Tulsa, and this new program will help provide a fun and safe environment to help build those relationships.”

Numerous donations and funding from the Tulsa community have allowed the project to become a reality. Local Walmarts have donated 10 TVs for use, while the Tulsa Hills GameStop donated 10 PS4s. FC Tulsa’s Official Supporters Group, 83 United, purchased copies of FIFA, Rocket League and Madden, and a local Target and a local printer, TPSi, also each donated $500 to go towards the initiative.

“It has been so heartwarming to see all corners of our city stepping up to help us get Project eNGAGE off the ground,” said FC Tulsa president James Cannon. “We pride ourselves on being more than just a sports team, but instead an organization that builds a better Tulsa community every day. This opportunity to help bridge the divide between our local police force and the under-resourced youth in our city is another chance for FC Tulsa to live up to that calling.”
