TULSA – As they say in life and in goalkeeping, consistency is key. Consistency is exactly what you’ll get from Sean Lewis, FC Tulsa’s 2020 MVP and the first signing to the 2021 roster. FC Tulsa announced the signing of Sean Lewis on a multiyear deal on Thursday morning, pending league and federation approval. Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed, per club policy.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for me to stay involved with this team and where we’re going,” said Lewis. “It’s always great to have a steady performance that the club recognizes and wants to keep around. It says a lot about the club’s leadership, the ownership of the club, and what they’re doing to keep us around because consistency is key with players. We know what we can do, and we did it relatively consistently last year. We’re just looking for more consistency in our best performances. Getting more of our best going forward.”
Lewis is entering his fifth season in the USL Championship, and his third consecutive with FC Tulsa. And it’s not just his presence that’s consistent, it’s his performance. Lewis is coming off a career-best year, in which he posted a new career high for clean sheets, save percentage, and total saves.
“We had an exciting year last year,” Lewis said. “With the steps we took forward, we reset the standards for this club and overachieved as far as the standards that were set for us. We set our own standard, and we’re raising the bar in Tulsa. It’s exciting to be a part of that.”
Lewis was nominated for Save of the Week three times during the 2020 season, and he had some of the most memorable performances from a historic season. His seven-save performance in the season opener at Sacramento Republic FC set the tone for the season, and his eight-save performance in the USL Championship Playoffs against El Paso Locomotive FC included five incredible stops in extra time to force penalties.
Lewis is the first player announced as returner for FC Tulsa in 2021, and it comes on the heels of the news that head coach Michael Nsien will be back on the touchline for the upcoming season. Nsien was named FC Tulsa head coach ahead of the 2019 season, Lewis’ first with the Tulsa USL franchise. Now, the two are back for their third season together.
“Obviously working together for the past two years was great,” Lewis said. “We built a good about of trust between each other. The confidence we have in each other and the comfort and trust we’ve built has me excited for what we can do going forward.”
Consistency is key in this game, and the commitment from FC Tulsa ownership and technical staff to continue to build on that consistency is a sign of good things to come for the club.
