TULSA – FC Tulsa is again bolstering its backline, this time with a former Liga MX defender. The club has signed 26-year-old Victor Milke for the remainder of the 2021 USL Championship season as it pushes for a second consecutive Playoffs berth. Milke comes to Tulsa following a seven-year career in Mexico, the bulk of which came at Querétaro FC in Liga MX.

"Victor strengthens the backline and is also capable of playing defensive midfield," said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. "His experience in Mexico and his qualities on the field will serve us well as we come into the second half of the season. We look forward to him adapting to our environment and giving his best for our club and its supporters."

Milke came up through the Querétaro FC youth system and made his debut for the senior team in Copa MX Apertura on August 21, 2014, as a substitute. From 2014-2017, Milke made 17 appearances for Querétaro FC in Liga MX, Copa MX and CONCACAF Champions League. He scored his first Liga MX goal in a 2-1 loss to Deportivo Guadalajara, more commonly known as Chivas, and scored again in the Champions League in a 2-0 win over San Francisco FC from Panama.

During the 16-17 season, Milke was loaned to Cimarrones de Sonora where he made 11 appearances but returned to Querétaro FC to start the 17-18 season. Over the next three seasons, Milke made 16 more appearances in Liga MX and Copa MX.

“I am very proud and happy to sign with FC Tulsa,” said Milke. “It is good to come to a club that is going in the right direction. I’m sure that with hard work and commitment, we are going to accomplish big things for the people of Tulsa.”

Last season, Milke signed with Club de Atlético Morelia in Liga Expansión MX where he had a career season in Mexico’s second division. Milke scored five goals in 37 appearances in all competitions last year, serving as Morelia’s captain in two matches. He led Morelia to a first-place finish in the Clausura standings.

Milke is available for selection for FC Tulsa this weekend as it plays on the road at Birmingham Legion FC on Sunday, August 22. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CT.

Without further ado, let’s break down the race for Moment of the Year.

FRONT RUNNER – FC Tulsa’s Work in Greenwood
This year marked the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre, and FC Tulsa wanted to do its part to commemorate the event, while also celebrating the present and future of Greenwood.

Before the season began, FC Tulsa made a $25,000 donation to Greenwood Rising, a state-of-the-art historical center, depicting how Greenwood was before the Massacre, and what transpired during those fateful days in 1921. FC Tulsa presented a check to the Centennial Commission Chair, Senator Kevin Matthews and Project Manager, Phil Armstrong.

During the club’s preseason, the entirety of FC Tulsa, from coaches, players, ownership and the front office all took a tour of Greenwood led by Chief Amusan, a descendant of victims of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Through the tour, FC Tulsa learned itself about Greenwood so those at the club can help educate others.

Finally, to celebrate the future of Greenwood, FC Tulsa is wearing a “Greenwood Ave.” patch on its jerseys throughout the season. “Greenwood Ave.” is a black-owned business in Greenwood, and 100% of the proceeds from sales of the patch are going towards the funding of the Black Wall Street Memorial.

While these are more than just a singular moment, it all adds up to an amazing initiative by the club to spread awareness, education and funds to help restore Greenwood.

RUNNER UP – FC Tulsa’s Season Opening Win at OKC Energy FC
What a way to start a season. On the road, at its biggest rival, FC Tulsa showed it’s a class above OKC Energy with a 3-1 victory to begin the season in the driver’s seat in the Black Gold Derby.

A dominating performance had the FC Tulsa fans who made the short drive to OKC in full voice throughout much of the 90 minutes. Many FC Tulsa players said after the match that the small section of the road fans were louder than the hundreds of home fans in attendance.

Two Joaquín Rivas goals, combined with a capper from Darío Suárez, sealed the victory. While the 2021 season has a been a roller coaster since that match, that result could be enough to clinch FC Tulsa the Wrench for the second consecutive season. The victory and +2 goal differential earned on that night in April mean that all FC Tulsa needs is a draw in its final meeting with OKC on October 30 at ONEOK Field to collect the rivalry hardware.

HONORABLE MENTION – 2021 Tulsa Dream League
Never before has the city of Tulsa had a fully funded elementary school soccer league in North Tulsa…until FC Tulsa came along. Through the generosity of the club and some corporate partners, FC Tulsa made possible the opportunity for under-resourced youth in North Tulsa to play the world’s game.

With several North Tulsa elementary and middle schools participating in the league, FC Tulsa had over 500 athletes playing soccer on Saturdays at the Tulsa Dream Center.

The league was so successful, it will continue in the Fall and of course be back next Spring as well.

DARK HORSE – Marlon Santos’ goal against Birmingham Legion FC
Could the late match-winner from Marlon in last Saturday’s victory be the turning point in FC Tulsa’s up and down season? We won’t know for sure until FC Tulsa is able to string some more wins together, but it certainly felt like a pivotal moment at the midway point of 2021.

From a three-match win streak to start the season, to a four-match losing streak that immediately preceded last Saturday’s victory, FC Tulsa has been inconsistent with its play. However, there are still 16 matches left to make a run and secure a Top-2 spot in the Central Division.  

Needless to say, there are likely to be plenty more memorable moments as we hit the second half of the 2021 season. TULSA – FC Tulsa is halfway through its 2021 season, and we are halfway through our Midseason Watch List series. Before we get to today’s piece, let us catch you up if you missed either of the first two entries in our four-part series.

Tuesday – Midseason Offensive Player of the Year

Today, we are going to break down the race for Newcomer of the Year. Before we do…a quick disclaimer. Three FC Tulsa players returned to the franchise this past offseason after previously having spent time with the club: Joaquín Rivas (2017-2018 with the Roughnecks), Jorge Corrales (2017) and Mo Jadama (2017). While technically all three are “new” to FC Tulsa, for the purposes of this piece, we will only look at players who stepped onto the ONEOK Field pitch in 2021 for the very first time in a Tulsa jersey.

With that out of the way, on to the Watch List!

FRONT RUNNER – Kembo Kibato
It’s sometimes easy to forget that Kibato is just 20 years old and playing his second season of professional soccer. With a preseason injury to USL Championship legend Lebo Moloto and an in-season minor knock to Eric Bird, Kibato has had to pick up the slack in the central midfield. He’s made 14 appearances with nine starts and has accrued 856 minutes, the 11th most on the club.

The loanee from Rio Grande Valley FC has scored two goals, added an assist and looked the part of a USL Championship veteran despite having less than one full season’s worth of appearances as a professional player (26).

He is a well-rounded center mid as well, as he ranks in the top seve on FC Tulsa in blocks, tackles and tackles won defensively. His 86.7% passing accuracy is the highest of any FC Tulsa player, and he is the only player that isn’t a “true attacker” with multiple goals for FC Tulsa in 2020.

While he may not always be in the Starting XI, look for Kibato to continue to play a key role for FC Tulsa – like he did when scoring the final goal in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Birmingham Legion FC.

RUNNER UP – Austin Wormell
When FC Tulsa signed Wormell off Rogers State University’s roster in February, right in the middle of his senior season, the hope was that the Tulsa native would fill out the goalkeeping corps and possibly develop into a starting keeper in down the road. No one could have guessed that opportunity would come just nine matches into the 2021 season.

That surprising progression is credit to Wormell’s talent and hard work with Tulsa throughout the preseason and regular season as he made his way up the depth chart.

He recorded his first professional victory in his first start, recorded his first clean sheet in his second and has already claimed a win over Central Division leaders Louisville City FC this season. Not bad for a rookie.

While Wormell still has plenty of room to grow, it’s nice to know that FC Tulsa has two solid keepers in net with Wormell and Sean Lewis.

HONORABLE MENTION – Lucas Coutinho
Coming from Tormenta FC in USL League One, Coutinho was another offseason signing who flew under the radar amongst USL Championship fans. Those who had seen him in League One, however, knew better.

While he remains buried a bit on the depth chart, behind others who can play attacking midfielder such as Rodrigo da Costa, Joaquín Rivas and Lebo Moloto, Coutinho has made the most of his limited minutes. He’s totaled 182 minutes in seven appearances with two starts.

In those 182 minutes this season, Coutinho has one goal and one assist to go along with five chances created. While it’s a much smaller sample size, Coutinho creates one chance every 36 minutes, a number that’s better than even da Costa, who creates one every 44 minutes.

DARK HORSE – Jason Johnson
Yes, we know he’s only just arrived and had two appearances, but if Saturday’s match was any indication, “JJ” will move quickly up this list. Johnson has one come on as a sub in his debut and then made his first start. In only 88 total minutes across those two matches, Johnson has one assist, three shots and three chances created. If not for a slightly heavy touch while rounding the Birmingham keeper on Saturday, he would have had a goal to add to that as well.

The striker formerly of Phoenix Rising and Louisville City has looked as good as advertised and could be a major force for FC Tulsa down the stretch in 2021.

With still 16 matches left, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Johnson play his way not only into being the Newcomer of the Year, but also into the Offensive Player of the Year race as well.

TULSA – We are back for Part Two of our FC Tulsa Midseason Watch List, where we analyze the races for some key end of the season awards! In today’s edition, we will highlight some individuals who have stood out on the defensive side of the ball and might be in the mix for Defensive Player of the Year.

Let’s jump right in.

FRONT RUNNER – Eric Bird
“Wait,” you say, “He’s not a defender!” True, but let’s see what the numbers tell us.

Did you know that midfielder Eric Bird currently leads FC Tulsa in total tackles and tackles won? In fact, he ranks 16th overall in the USL Championship in tackles won. He’s also tied for third in interceptions and is third in duels won on the team, constantly winning back possession for FC Tulsa.

In FC Tulsa’s defensive half, Bird has a pass percentage near 90%, despite having the second most passes on the team this season.

The most telling stat might be this final one – when Bird plays a full 90 minutes, FC Tulsa is 4-1-1 in 2021. After experiencing a head injury early in the season that caused him to miss two matches, Bird has played in every other match, starting each of the last 11.

RUNNER UP – Bradley Bourgeois
FC Tulsa’s captain and reigning Defensive Player of the Year has had a solid start to 2021. Bourgeois is second on the team in interceptions, second in blocks and third in clearances, even while missing five matches this summer due to injury. He’s won 58% of his duels this year and 60% of his aerial duels, winning possession for FC Tulsa on 50/50 balls.

His versatility should be noted as well as Bourgeois has lined up at both center back and right back throughout the season.

Bourgeois has also chipped in offensively on occasion, with one assist in 2021. While it won’t go down in the scoresheet, his never give up attitude directly resulted in Marlon’s match winner on Saturday over Birmingham when Bourgeois kept the ball alive, despite falling to the ground in the chaos.

HONORABLE MENTION – Jorge Corrales
FC Tulsa’s locked in starting left back from MLS has looked the part for most of the 2021 season. Corrales leads the team in interceptions, is fourth in tackles and is fourth in clearances. His pace and effort on the left side routinely cause problems for opposing teams no matter what side of the pitch the ball is on.

Corrales has missed three matches representing Cuba in both World Cup qualifying and the Gold Cup, but has started every other match this season for FC Tulsa. Offensively, he’s got two assists this season, one in each of the first two matches, and has created the second most chances on the team with 13, behind Rodrigo da Costa.

DARK HORSE – Matt Sheldon
FC Tulsa re-signing Matt Sheldon this past offseason might have flown under the radar when considering all of the other moves made to bolster the defense this offseason. On paper, it may have seemed like Sheldon was on the outside of the Starting XI looking in, but his versatility, combined with injuries and international absences, has meant Sheldon has started 15 of the 16 matches.

He’s played left wing, right wing, left back and his natural right back at different points this season. The Bellevue, Wash. Native ranks first on the club in aerial duels won, second in totals duels, third in blocks and third in interceptions in 2021. On the offensive end, he’s recorded two assists and even bagged his first professional goal in FC Tulsa’s win on Saturday.

Don’t count out Sheldon in this race, especially if he continues to chip in all over the pitch.

FC Tulsa’s locked in starting left back from MLS has looked the part for most of the 2021 season. Corrales leads the team in interceptions, is fourth in tackles and is fourth in clearances. His pace and effort on the left side routinely cause problems for opposing teams no matter what side of the pitch the ball is on.

Corrales has missed three matches representing Cuba in both World Cup qualifying and the Gold Cup, but has started every other match this season for FC Tulsa. Offensively, he’s got two assists this season, one in each of the first two matches, and has created the second most chances on the team with 13, behind Rodrigo da Costa.

DARK HORSE – Matt Sheldon
FC Tulsa re-signing Matt Sheldon this past offseason might have flown under the radar when considering all of the other moves made to bolster the defense this offseason. On paper, it may have seemed like Sheldon was on the outside of the Starting XI looking in, but his versatility, combined with injuries and international absences, has meant Sheldon has started 15 of the 16 matches.

He’s played left wing, right wing, left back and his natural right back at different points this season. The Bellevue, Wash. Native ranks first on the club in aerial duels won, second in totals duels, third in blocks and third in interceptions in 2021. On the offensive end, he’s recorded two assists and even bagged his first professional goal in FC Tulsa’s win on Saturday.

Don’t count out Sheldon in this race, especially if he continues to chip in all over the pitch.

Fenwick was a fixture in Lights FC’s backline last season, playing every minute of the team’s 15 matches following the COVID-19 delay of the season. He served as the captain for Las Vegas in three matches while scoring his first USL Championship goal on August 30, 2020 against LA Galaxy II.

Let’s get started with our Midseason Offensive Player of the Year Award Watch List.

FRONT RUNNER – Rodrigo da Costa
Could it be anyone else? The Brazilian attacker has found his All-League form from 2019 with eight goals and four assists through 16 matches. Both totals rank in the top 10 in the USL Championship so far this season. Da Costa has started all 16 matches over the course of the season, has worn the armband in the stead of captain Bradley Bourgeois when necessary and had four matches already this season where he has been on the scoresheet twice.

The 27-year-old vice-captain is not just a goalscorer as he has created 31 chances so far in 2021, the most on FC Tulsa by a wide margin and the seventh-most in the league. If he maintains his pace, da Costa could surpass his 2019 season where he finished with nine goals and 13 assists and made the USL Championship’s All-League Second Team. Not only would an FC Tulsa end of the season award be in the cards, but some league hardware could be as well.

RUNNER UP – Darío Suárez
While Super Darío hasn’t been the scoring leader for FC Tulsa in 2021 like he was in 2020, the reigning FC Tulsa Offensive Player of the Year has been a significant offensive contributor, with four goals and two assists this season. He’s played in all 16 matches and has appeared in every single match of the FC Tulsa era, something that must be commended.

He hasn’t gotten on the scoresheet with a goal or assist in the last seven matches, but Suárez is streaky and can get hot in a heartbeat. Don’t be surprised if Super Darío goes on another tear in the second half of 2021 and makes a move for his second consecutive Offensive Player of the Year honor.

HONORABLE MENTION: Joaquín Rivas
Rivas has done it on the national and international stage throughout 2021. He started off the year strong, with four goals in his first three matches of the season but has added just one goal and one assist to his season tally since. Part of the reason for that is due to not being available. Rivas has missed six matches this year – five due to international duty and one because of injury. When factoring in that Rivas has played in just 10 USL Championship matches this season, the five goals and one assist stand out even more.

Rivas looks close to finding that early season form again however, as the forward has six shots, three chances created and one assist over his last two matches. If not for some excellent opposing goalkeeping, he might have added to his goal total last week as well.

DARK HORSE – Marlon Santos
Da Costa’s countryman might be setting up for a strong second half of the season following his late match winner on Saturday night against Birmingham Legion FC. That goal gave Marlon four goals on the season to go along with one assist. However, Marlon’s impact goes beyond the scoresheet.

Anyone who has watched an FC Tulsa match in 2021 has noticed Marlon on the right wing, routinely beating defenders through his speed and footwork on the ball. He ranks third on the team in tackles won, second in aerial duels won and first in overall duels won. One underrated stat is the amount of fouls Marlon wins. So far this season, the fiery Brazilian has drawn 31 fouls, the 11th most in the USL Championship. That’s 31 set pieces, many in the attacking half, that FC Tulsa has gained through Marlon’s aggressive play.

While he will get credit for the match winning goal, he should also be applauded for drawing the free kick that set off the sequence to his match winner.

TULSA – FC Tulsa has agreed to transfer and personal contract terms to acquire Jamaican international forward Jason Johnson from Austin Bold FC, pending league and federation approval. Terms of the transfer will not be disclosed, per club policy. Johnson is traveling to Tulsa and is working to make him available for selection immediately as FC Tulsa takes on Indy Eleven on Wednesday night at ONEOK Field.

"Jason has been one the most dangerous players in the USL Championship since he arrived," said FC Tulsa head coach Michael Nsien. "We believe the team needed a different type of striker profile to vary our attack. Jason will give us a vertical threat, and opponents will have to consider how high they can defend up the field because Jason can exploit space behind. He is also very good at holding the ball and allowing the team to gain space higher up the field. I'm looking forward to bringing him into our team as he’s known to be very hard working and an exceptional teammate."

Johnson, 30, is a dynamic forward with a goalscoring history in MLS and the USL Championship. The Jamaican burst onto the American soccer scene as a college superstar at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He was drafted in the first round, number 13 overall, in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft by Houston Dynamo FC and scored his first MLS regular season goal against New Your Red Bulls during his rookie campaign.

Overall, Johnson scored four goals in an MLS uniform, including a CONCACAF Champions League goal for Dynamo FC  in 2013 and two more regular season goal for Chicago Fire FC in 2015. Making a move to the USL Championship in 2016, Johnson has been one of the most potent scorers in the league over the last six seasons, where he suited up for San Antonio FC, Phoenix Rising FC, Louisville City FC and Austin Bold FC.

"I’m familiar with the talent within FC Tulsa, the way they play and I admire their style," said Johnson. "I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to help the team reach our goals.

With 28 regular season goals and two Playoffs goals in his USL Championship career, Johnson was a member of the Phoenix team that won the 2019 USL Championship regular season title and the 2020 LouCity team that advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Johnson has made three international appearances for Jamaica, most recently in a pair of 2013 friendlies against Trinidad & Tobago.

Despite El Salvador being eliminated by the 2022 FIFA World Cup hosts Qatar in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Rivas put in a performance sure to make 6.5 million Salvadorians, as well as FC Tulsa fans everywhere, very proud. Rivas appeared in all four matches for "La Selecta" during its Quarterfinal run, starting three and scoring thrice.

Rivas was subbed on late in El Salvador’s first matchup against Guatemala and made an instant impact, scoring the all-important second goal with a brilliant left-footed finish in stoppage time to secure the 2-0 victory.

To cap off his 2021 Gold Cup run, Rivas scored twice in El Salvador’s final matchup with Qatar in the Quarterfinals. Showing off his finesse and mental awareness, Rivas guided in two goals within 180 seconds of each other in the 63’ and 66’ minutes. Just six minutes after scoring his second, Rivas had his potential third goal disallowed for offside. Well past the 90-minute mark, a hat trick evaded Rivas once again as his shot was denied by the Qatar keeper.

It looked like FC Tulsa would go ahead early as forward Marlon Santos nearly snuck the ball into the goal after a shot deflected off the Memphis keeper Kyle Morton’s heel. A fantastic sliding recovery by 901 FC defender Mark Segbers cleared the shot off the line and kept Tulsa off the board early.

The lone goal of the match came off the bandaged head of Memphis forward Kyle Murphy in first-half stoppage time after being involved in a collision in the 11' minute. Murphy won a header in the box and just put his shot past the rising hand of keeper Austin Wormell to give Memphis the lead going into the break.

A stop and start second half never allowed either team to find a rhythm, but again, FC Tulsa nearly broke through. Defender Mo Jadama had an excellent look in the nine minutes of second half stoppage time to draw even for Tulsa, but the Gambian's header ended up rattling off the crossbar. 

In the final seconds of stoppage time, it appeared FC Tulsa would be thrown a lifetime when a cross appeared to hit the outstretched hand of a Memphis defender. However, the officials didn't award the penalty, and FC Tulsa was shut out for just the third time in 2021. 

Here are three takeaways from the defeat…

1) Bourgeois Makes Return to Pitch
After missing the previous five matches due to injury, mainstay captain Bradley Bourgeois made his return to the pitch for FC Tulsa. The defender came on for Kevin Garcia in the second half, logging 29 minutes as head coach Michael Nsien eased Bourgeois back into action.

Despite the limited minutes, Bourgeois made an impact, creating one chance and converting a pass percentage at 92%. 

2) Still in 3rd Place in the Central Division
Despite dropping its last two matches, FC Tulsa is still in a good place in the standings as the end of summer approaches. Tulsa still holds a USL Championship Playoff spot and has the second-best conversion rate in USL. 

The return of Joaquín Rivas to the team this week, coming off a two-goal performance tonight for El Salvador, will also boost a squad who has scored just one goal in its last 180 minutes.

3) FC Tulsa Makes TV History
Tonight marked the first time a regular season FC Tulsa match was broadcast on local network television. After 5,000+ fans represented FC Tulsa in its last home match at ONEOK Field, FOX23 shifted the match to its main network to allow more fans to watch the club on the road.

Tonight marked the first time a regular season FC Tulsa match was broadcast on local network television. After 5,000+ fans represented FC Tulsa in its last home match at ONEOK Field, FOX23 shifted the match to its main network to allow more fans to watch the club on the road.
